Use the Internet to Find a Job – Part 1: The Basics

Knowing where to find a jo is the first step.  In today’s career search, the Internet is vital.  Gone are the days of faxing and door-to-door marketing.  (Although, do not discount those methods!)  Email and the Internet are here and they are not going any where, any time soon!

Most companies utilize an applicant tracking system and tailor their searches to Internet job boards.  Similarly, most recruiters find potential candidates by searching around on the Internet, using buzzwords found on a resume.  Most companies and recruiters want you to email them a resume, so setting up a free email account is essential.  Unless a hiring manager networks his or her way directly to you, you are going to have to learn to use the Internet as a main source of finding that right career for you.

If you do not have Internet access, use a friend or family member’s computer or go to your local public library.  If you are an Internet novice, enroll in to a class to learn the basics of Internet terminology and navigation.  Look for affordable Internet classes at your local public library, community colleges, high schools or other institutions in your area offering these classes to the public.  Do not be intimidated or embarrassed.  As we stated earlier, in today’s career search, the Internet is vital!

Create an electronic version of your resume with a word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word).  You may also want to create an Adobe PDF version of your resume.  Depending on where you post your resume or where you email it, they may want a Word version or PDF version.

Set up an email account to provide instant access of your resume to employers, networking contacts or recruiting professionals.  Free email accounts are available through Yahoo, Google (Gmail) and Hotmail.  Create an appropriate and professional email account name, not “BeerDrinker@___.com”.  Do not submit your resume with a confusing attachment named “821080res.doc (for example), but rather use your name or a descriptive label (e.g., job title).

Rest

Job was a man of exceeding wealth and impeccable character before God allows the accuser to take away the former in the attempt to destroy the later.  In the midst of this trial “Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.”

After Job’s friends had mourned with him in silence for seven days and seven nights Job curses the day of his birth.  He then questions the purpose of life for those who are incapable of partaking in its joys and pleasures.  The singular reason Job longs for death stems from his desire for rest.

Job rightly laments his condition.  The poverty Job endures in his physical state rails against the course that the human body naturally desires.  The body yearns for peace and rest.  Yet, pain and suffering fill the void in their absence, and labor to pull the sufferer fully into their deathly grasp.  The hopeless will languish and expire–”Do you still hold fast your integrity?  Curse God and die.”  Yet, hope inspires the weary toward that rest which they rightly desire.

Modelling

What means modelling? It is definitely not only glamour. It is also hard work.

I know what I am talking about. When I do the Stylings for a Photoshoot I can see  how hard they have to act in front of the camera.

You have to be trained to be comfortable in front of a camera, you have to learn catwalk techniques, and you have to understand basic acting for TV and commercial work gaining confidence in yourself and your appearance.

Self-development offers you confidence within yourselve whilst encouraging a healthy self-image.

You have to do training courses in modelling, deportment, goal setting and style training. Whether you’re a teenager looking to have fun and make new friends, a young adult looking for style and confidence, an aspiring young model, or a professional looking for an updated corporate image.

Be careful to find the right support. Courses have to be run by highly qualified professionals who offer special care and attention to you in a safe and friendly environment.

Whatever path you choose in life training can be the first step to achieving your career and personal goals not only as a model. more….

Focused

I need to become more focused on what matters, and who matters. I’m tired of putting 100%, and barely getting 50% back. I’ve recently started applying for jobs, my current one is a huge fail. Now, on to school.  I need to become more focused. My grades need to matter more, my scholarship is what is basically helping me stay afloat, and I’ve been focused too much on unimportant things. Next..who matters. I’m tired of caring so much about everyone and everything. I’m done with focusing too much on the well-being of others.

Sometimes...

Sometimes I feel like an adult in a kid’s body, and sometimes I feel exactly the opposite.

I came to this realization today while I was blowing bubbles in my milk with a straw. But more on that later.

I realized that sometimes I can’t wait to be a real grown up with real work experience, have the experience I need to get a job, and be an adult. Except I can’t do that yet because I’m only 21 and I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I’m 21, an almost college graduate, and I need a job.

On the other side, I feel like 5th grade Melissa is trying to bust out of the adult body I’m living in. Today for lunch, I had PB&J with potato chips layered inside. (If you say you haven’t done that, you’re lying.) I also started a harmless rumor and blew bubbles in my milk with a straw.

Being a kid was so much easier. I went to school 2 blocks from home, walked home with my best friend, and she’d stay until exactly 5:27 which gave her the right amount of time to get home by 5:30 for dinner. On the weekends, we’d meet halfway, right by the bushes in front of some old lady’s house.

Sometimes I feel like a kid in an adult’s body, and sometimes I feel exactly the opposite.

Da Management

The big news at the dealership is a change of management! The previous manager decided he’d had enough of targets and paperwork and quit quite suddenly. A minor company game of management musical chairs ensued, and the manager of a smaller provincial dealership arrived a few days later to take the reins.

Young, keen, earnest and professional, this guy is chalk and cheddar to the outgoing manager, like-able chap though he was. Suddenly we’ve got someone who’s always there, always helping, always supportive. He’s taken some of the admin workload weight and he’s very much there to help us do business. And the difference is immediately apparent, my personal sales are up a good fifty percent, this last four weeks being my busiest ever by some margin on used cars (which, oddly, seems to be where the money is to be made rather than new).

I’m also starting to see some decent money from this, always a strong motivator.

As to the job itself, well I’m half a year in at the end of this month, remarkably. The paper-trial doesn’t get any easier (albeit helped slightly by the new boss) but I feel on top of it as regards used cars, and definitely getting there with the new stuff. However the ease that knowledge and ability bring is offset by the quantity brought on by increased sales. And Motability sales remain a black art of form filling, computer inputting and organisation that I’d rather steer well clear of for the moment.

So the overview halfway through the first year is one of a continued building of success, very much aided and abetted by the change of boss. The mechanics of the job are not too difficult once grasped, there’s just so very much of it and the skill seems to be in the juggling of it all and making everything happen on time which can get a little stressful. All in all though, it’s a positive vibe and we’ll see how the summer pans out.

So far, so good then, and with the support I’m now getting I believe it can only get better.

Sexy By Summer (Day 28)

Day 28 March 14,          (Weighing in 1 day)

This morning I ate a kiwi for breakfast. It was delicious! I haven’t eaten a kiwi for years. I also had a coffee. Coffee always picks me up in the morning.

Lunch was left over chili with cheese on top. It was much tastier than last night. Chili is always better the next day. Just like spaghetti and soups. Must be all the spices settling in.

Then for dinner I ate chicken and asparagus. I’m starting to like asparagus. I like it a lot more than I used. My taste buds must be maturing. LOL just like I never used to like avocados. And now I do.

I didn’t exercise today.  It’s Sunday.

Note to self: Try not to be discouraged if you don’t hit your weight goal tomorrow.

“THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HAS TAKEN AWAY”

The year 2007 was unusual for us. That year, God gave, and He took away. Like Job, who worshiped God with these words after learning of his total loss, we also said “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord”. (Job 1:21).

On March 15, 2007, God gave. He gave us our first grandson, Jehiel. What a blessing! We always heard others say how much fun grandparenting, and now, three years later, we can confirm it! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JEHIEL!   

On June 9, 2007, God took away. At 95 years of age, Mom left us, to be with Him. Her life was a blessing to many people, and even now, there’s not a day that passes that I don’t remember something she said or did. I am thankful for her example in many areas, and for having had a Godly mom!

God took away on September 26, 2007, too. That’s the day we were all shocked by Dad’s sudden passing away. Although he was 94, he was “94 years young” like one of his granddaughters expressed. His mind was very clear, and everyone who knew him had an interesting story to tell about him. I thank God for the influence Dad had on me in so many ways!

Yes, Job was right. He declared an eternal truth when he said that God gives and God takes away. I remember that truth every time I see little Jehiel. He is living proof of God’s goodness. God always gives. While it’s true that He takes away, it’s also a fact that He is the giver of good things. He never takes away and leaves us with nothing. In the Bible, we read: “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:16,17)

So when it seems that God takes something away from you, remember what James says: He doesn’t change, AND He also gives good gifts. Jehiel is proof enough for me!

Attachment Day 2

Things were abit more serious on this day… More of the tricky stuff and understanding more about being a Kindergarden teacher and the roles and responsibilities of teaching the kids

There are the happy moments and there are the sad moments…

Seriously I never thought the way I handle kids is very much like my dog training, except that kids have more expressions and vocal about things around them.

And towards the end of the day, I’ve met a Filipino kid who is so attached to his home that once he became sleepy and lethargic, he began looking for his mummy. I understood from the teacher that it has always been the grandparents who brought him to class only the first day that the mummy brought him there to register and introduce to the kindergarden :|

The mistake I made was that I gave more than empathy towards this kid that he cling onto me and sought comfort with me. I was busy coaxing him that I fail to realise this until the Principal Mrs Chong stepped in and asked what’s wrong. Then it became a little too late to withdraw myself from him. BTW, his name is Josh. cute kid just that he is too attached and lethargic that he demonstrated such behaviour. The teacher Ms Maggie was also puzzled that Josh was a little jumpy today. No one disturbed him, and he just snapped like that :|

Luckily Mrs Chong suggested to distract him with paintings and Josh calmed down by focusing on drawing Orangy paintings. Josh wanted to break away but I convinced him to stay on the drawings and drew, starting with smiley faces of simple 3 strokes, then to just some abstract drawings.

Two new jobs...and a lingering cat problem?

There is much to say since my last post!

Seems my life situation is continually improving! Many things worth mentioning: I’ve found a replacement for Trader Joe’s potstickers, embarked on two volunteer efforts, made progress on my goals with Travel, and gotten not one but TWO part time jobs to fill the job void that has existed for the past 3 months. I am slowly emerging from a life of near hermitage. Took a good long bike ride today, got some color on my face,  life is gooooood.

Last thursday I started part time job number one at Webster University’s media center. The next day, I got a call from Robert Bullivant expressing that he’d like me to be somewhat of a second assistant at his printing business in Soulard. He also wants me to design his business’s website. Web design is a hobby that I continually give up on then reconnect with. But like most things in life, you have to dive in and commit. So this time I got all the necessary books and have been taking the time to really learn the ropes and don’t plan on giving it up. This summer I have 3 sites to get done.

So, this past week, I’ve gotten acquainted with two new jobs, finished a demo website for my sister, and perpetuated a few of my own projects. In the midst of all the madness, I got a phonecall on Sunday from a woman named Rosemary who had seen a flyer at her church for my missing cat, Scrat. Scrat ran away 6 months ago, and I have since adopted Hadley and accepted that he’s gone. Back in September I’d plastered the neighborhood with my missing cat flyers that clearly described him as a large short hair gray cat with green eyes. I guess one of these had somehow migrated to a church? I don’t remember putting one up in a church, only in the vicinity of one. I suppose that someone, out of the goodness of their heart, had taken the liberty of taking it in for me. Someone much like Rosemary.

Anyways, Rosemary was calling with good news. She found a flyer for a cat that someone had found, and wanted to call and relay the number to me. I took note of the number she gave me and put it on my to-do list to call the next day. So I did just that and no answer…..I left a message on the answering machine with my name and number. Well, Rosemary didn’t stop calling me. She persisted in sending me urgent messages to call her and report. I always received these at bad times, and frankly it was getting annoying. I didn’t want to answer out of spite. It seemed that Rosemary wanted so bad for it to be my cat for her own absolution. It was apparently her current mission to bring this union.

So, yesterday I finally got a call back from the poor man I’d called asking about the found cat. His message was just bizarre, and made me laugh. It was an old man who spoke very slowly. He’d found the owner of the cat already, and went on to describe the cat as being a Sphynx cat with no fur and large bat-like ears?! What?? Oh, Rosemary……..I feel bad. When I called her back, finally, she wasn’t home. Somewhat thankful for not having to talk to her, I left the message that it wasn’t Scrat with her husband–a man who has probably for the past week been at the mercy of a woman in toil and agony over my cat plight. Which is probably why as I was saying my thanks for their efforts, he said “thanks” abruptly and then hung up on me. I almost feel like I should have said it was my cat after all, and that we’re now happily reunited.

I guess that darn cat will never cease to haunt me. Causes trouble even after his sudden disappearance. Six months ago…

So, aside from inherent cat drama, things have been pretty chill. I have on tape material for a story on Niche restaurant for Travel, and I have Venice Cafe in the books for the end of the month. Exciting things are happening, slowly but surely. Building a business is hard stuff, especially when life gets in the way. But as long as I stay actively shooting and creating content for this or that, I feel that much closer to being actively working in the industry. Maybe? Yes!

Levi threw a party at his house. Lots of tax collectors and others came…Jesus brought his crew as well. Just thinking out loud, Levi being wealthy probably knew how to throw a nice shindig. His boys were just like him, outcasts who only hung with each other.  Partying was very good around his parts and was very easy to do.  Maybe Levi had another motive in this get together. Maybe he and Jesus chatted about “how they can reach his friends…or the out cast.” That sounds familiar doesn’t it (Student Ministry concept)?

So the party took place and was a hit, except for the party crashers (Pharisees and teacher of the law) who seem to be at every place like reverse groupies.  Can you imagine the stares? Imagine being “horrible” and now you come in the light…and people were now staring at you and giving you very dirty looks worst than before. It wasn’t just the “good people” (Jews and teachers), but now the people you use to hang with.  They call you a sell out and try to persuade you to join the ranks again.  It was a tough call for Levi. A tough situation with thorns now on every side of him…closing in quick.

I like how he handled the situation at the get together. Oops, he didn’t really handle it.  Jesus did the handling.  He told the opposition (even the disciples that were following) that he didn’t come to call the righteous but the sinners to repentance. In other words…THAT’S MY PEOPLE, THE ONES WHO CAN’T GET IT TOGETHER! Jesus wants those who are willing to trade their lives for something far greater (not easier).  Matthew knew his desires had to be let go and NEW desires had to be in its place.

1. In what ways are there thorns in your life that keeps you from reaching in the direction that Jesus is calling you? (Is it a certain group of friends, family, job, hobbies, etc?)

2. We need to stay focus…remember when HE called us, when HE chose us, and when HE defends us.  Jesus wanted us.  May we be spurred by that.

It is really hard to walk in a snuggie

It is.  It keeps getting intertwined in my flip flops and I just step all over the big pink bastard.  Impossible.

Today was splendiferous.  Not the events of my day, but the weather.  God bless living in the south.  I kept having these zen blissful moments the entire day long.  And no, I was not high.  Or having a flashback.  I just sat on my deck, and was completely peaceful, and happy, just looking at the sky.

The events of the day were pretty shitty actually.  I couldn’t file my weekly unemployment because my benefit year is up.  I tried calling those hard working state employees, but their line was so clogged the message just said my call could not be completed at this time.  When?  When can it be completed?  This is bad news.  This is very bad news.  I may actually have to get a job.  Fuck.  But the weather was so glorious, I just felt like maybe, everything will be okay.

I could be a greeter at Walmart.  Lord knows I spend most of my unemployment checks there.  Or I could stock grocery store shelves, or sell cigarettes to non-minors at the gas station.  All of these things make me want to die a little.  I want to be a nurse, but that requires a lot of school I would have to coordinate making money, with finding affordable child care.  Fuck.  Again.

So there is the ever-unpopular idea of being a surrogate.  Birth someone else’s baby.  I am drug and disease free.  My womb is not doing anything else.  It might as well bear life for someone who otherwise can’t.  Lord knows I am not dating anyone.  Ever, at all.  So what difference does it make if I’m pregnant while picking up diapers at Walmart?  None at all.  Then I can blog about my nipples, and throwing up, and dr. appts.  Jesus.  This is my life.

I am a good mommy chick.  I take care of my baby chicks.  And if I have to sell peach-flavored-blunts to disaffected youths, or have someone else’s baby to make sure my babies have food, and a place to sleep, I will do it.

Speaking of movies… I am watching “Running with scissors” right now, in my snuggie.  The book was fantastic.  And there are a lot of famous actors in this flick.  Maybe it will be good.

Looking for Employment in 2010

Looking for employment is so different these days.  No longer do we walk into a place of business, ask for an application,  bring it back with a resume.  We now not only have to look up the Company we are interested in working for, submit our information online, upload our resume, and pray that our resume ’speaks’ to the individual who ends up with it.  Of course, if the resume goes through a scanning system, we might be taken out in the first round of ’sorting’.

Combine that with the fact that our economy is deeply in trouble, plus the fact that you may not be as technologically gifted as others may be, and it is easy to become full of fear and pull back.

I, however, believe that if you keep plugging away, someone somewhere will see that you have the perseverance and fortitude to ‘compete’, and even if your skill set is slightly different, you still have multitudes to offer.

Take my current resume, for example.  You can find it in this blog under ‘Hire the Right Person’.  I took an eight hour Social Online Networking course at the Urban Hive last Saturday with Mr. Alejandro Reyes.  Alejandro is an up and coming ‘local boy made good’ from West Sacramento who has embraced social online networking and is starting to gain recognition for his work.

I learned immediately the power of social online networking, and am personally going to devote the next 30-60 days implementing what he has taught.  Alejandro’s service, ‘Get Internet Famous’, was created out of Alejandro’s passion for talking with other people.

So, within that sometimes long, sometimes short eight hours, I came to the realization that I need to ‘put myself out there’ and blog to create interest in who I am and what my capabilities are.  This is a little challenging, as I have led a very private life the last few years after dealing with some personal life issues, but really – who DOESN’T have life issues?

I had a personal blog that I started in November of 2008, when I was first introduced to Social Online Networking.  I soon found myself staying up until 1:00 a.m. in the morning trying to answer every single response that was sent to me on www.Start Up Biz.com.  Then, along came ‘Julito77′ who quickly advised me to just ‘be myself’ and not worry about the millions of offers to make money overnight.

This past year, I have built one Facebook page for a client, Dr. Dennis Godby, N.M.D to the point where he could take it over and manage it, and I gave some free advice to a young Christian man in Africa who shared with me his passion to ‘change his people’ with his positive messages.  Theophilus Amarh, Jnr now has ‘The Leadership Academy’ and is developing a DVD!

I share all this to let the reader (who may be a prospective employer) know that yes, old ‘dogs’ can learn new tricks!

Even though I have two start up businesses, QuietProductions Conceptual Marketing and Body Blessings Massage Therapy and Aromatherapy, they are really still in the nucleus stage, and I can see that if I want them to succeed, I need to really complete the business plans.  So, I am now in a position where I need funding, and this means going back to work for someone.

I am looking for an employer who knows the worth of human perseverance and a good, old fashioned work ethic.  There are many things I am capable of, in fact, I eventually succeed at almost all that I try.  Yes, I have fallen several times in life, but I have gotten back up.  I still believe in offering the best one has to offer, and being open to learning – whether it be new technology or a new approach to sales.

The most highly prized skill, channeling to talent

I learned an old man’s life story yesterday.

I was supposed to be working with my client, my home case who is absolutely determined to hate me, getting in another chunk of hours. But she was out running errands with a family member and wasn’t at the house when I got there, even though I had called ahead before coming. So there I was, being told that she should be back in about ten minutes, but in actuality having a whole hour to fill. I finished my notes and opened my puzzle book, not really able to focus on any of the words and shapes in front of me. So instead I watched her grandfather sharpen knives and expertly carve at a large hunk of pork. Seeing me watching him, he smiled and, in his heavy Spanish accent, he explained, “I don’t cook much anymore. It’s too much work. I used to cook in a hotel restaurant for 7,000 people a day, so I don’t really like cooking anymore.”

After that, it only took my fascinated questions and prompts to keep him talking. About how he started working when he was nine years old, and used to wash laundry by hand in the river. About going to school when there was still corporal punishment, his teachers acting as a second father figure. About coming to the United States in 1955 with only one other friend and no jacket, since he’d never dealt with cold weather before. About meeting his wife while working on a blueberry farm in Florida, a widow with two children, and marrying her in 1988.

It was the best conversation I’ve had all week, perhaps all month. Everything he said was fresh and new and fascinating, and all I had to do was keep moving him along by show him I was interested. This is the beauty of listening, and I’m constantly baffled that so many people fail to see it. People will tell you these things, will tell you almost anything, if you just sit there and say ”please, tell me more, I’m not going anywhere and I won’t interrupt, I promise. Just keep talking.” Sitting there, I was amazed that I was given so much insight into who this man was, when there was no reason for me to know except for my interest in the telling. I also wondered if my client, his granddaughter, knew half of these things about him, or would ever think to ask. Because the trick is, of course, that you must ask; otherwise people won’t tell you a damn thing.

This, of course, is not what my job is; not exactly. My job isn’t nearly as comfortable or instinctive, but rather trial and error and more errors and more trials. It is staying calm in the face of expletives and disrespect and tantrums. Well, not only staying calm, but grabbing hold in the midst of that and trying to carve healthier behaviors out of the destructive ones. I don’t think that I succeed at this second step very often, if ever, but I do stay calm and haven’t given up yet, so I suppose that is it’s own form of triumph.

It’s just…every day I work with these kids, I want to show and explain to them the strength in gentleness, which few adults even get, so how are they supposed to? How can I find a way to demonstrate this client–who looks at me with disgust because I don’t get angry or fight back, because I’m not aggressive but rather a soft, quiet person–how can I show her that I am stronger than she will ever be if she keeps going down this impulsive, disrespectful path?

I don’t mean it in an insulting way. I mean in a way that I am becoming fully aware of my strengths, as I am becoming equally aware that many people see these strengths as weaknesses. But they’re not. There is power in  gentleness, in empathy, in taking the time to be aware of people as more than just props in your own life. There is a worth in other people, and taking time to get to know them, and reminding yourself that you are not the star of your own personal vacuum. There is a worth and a strength and a power and …I wish I could use it better. I wish I could share it and channel it and use it as strongly as I feel it.

I wish that I could, but I don’t seem to be able to just yet. So for now, it’s just channeling more patience, and more calm, and grabbing every opportunity I get to listen and understand. And maybe one day I’ll have my own kitchen, and my own stranger, and my own story to tell.

Challenges

Shock Totem has this month’s challenge up and running.  A few slight shifts in the rules but pretty much same as it was last month.  Well except for the 30 people who signed up!  This shall be a challenge.  I wrote mine last night.  A simple piece quite less than the 1,000 limit.  So far, 1 reading and nothing needs to be changed.  I’ll have someone else look probably before the day is out.

Next challenge for me is to finish this not so short story.  It started with a 700 word piece that I did a couple of years back.  Complete rewrite, needed backstory, elaborate the story is what I was told… so I did, and now it has taken on a life of its own.  Currently it is over 4,000 words and I still have not reached the meat of the story.  Perhaps not meat, but the main part of the conflict.  Right now, I expect this will double in words before I am done.

And of course the on going search for a new job.  Friday will be job search day.  I still have a few hours of OT left from the week from hell.  Going to use them up for a me day, kinda.

a whiff of whimsy: the question of immigration

The headline “Singapore Moves to Curtail Immigration” in last week’s Wall Street Journal caught my eye. It seems like clamping down on immigration is the trend among developed countries such as Singapore, the United States and Britain. When the going is good, everyone is content for immigrant workers to clean the toilets and do the backbreaking labor. But during any financial crisis, these foreign workers are usually the ones who bear the brunt.

Does it benefit a country to reduce immigration regardless of whether it is developed or developing?

In our case, it does not. Indonesia is the flip side of Singapore. Being the fourth most populous country in the world, with more than 235 million people, we are the supplier of low-skilled workers to Malaysia, East Asia and the Middle East. When I asked several locals what their opinion was on foreign workers in Indonesia, they replied, “You mean the bules ?”

So our issue is not an influx of low-skilled workers taking away local jobs. Instead, we have highly skilled foreign workers taking upper-management positions.

Like many developing countries, we tend to welcome foreigners with open arms because most bring with them skills that can help the nation move forward. At least, that is our hope. Few Indonesians will say foreign workers have stolen our jobs.

However, being a highly skilled foreign worker doesn’t exempt you from falling victim to a financial crisis. Many foreign workers were sent home during the 1997-98 financial crisis mainly due to their high wages, which can reach triple those of local salaries. But even if the government cut back on foreign workers to open up more opportunities for locals, as it did during the 1997-98 financial crisis, would the locals prove capable enough in the long run?

BBC broadcaster Evan Davis’s documentary, “The Day the Immigrants Left,” asks a similar question: What would society be like if Britain didn’t have immigrants? As an experiment, he placed 12 unemployed resident of a small town in jobs normally occupied by low-skilled foreign workers.

“What’s undoubtedly the case is that a lot of these jobs are backbreaking jobs and there is not a lot of demand by British workers to do these,” he said.

We have the opposite problem. Though we didn’t collapse when many foreigners left in 1998, both the locals and expats I spoke with agreed that Indonesia needs highly skilled immigrants because the country isn’t ready to stand alone just yet. We have the manpower, but most still lack the education and training to take the country to the next level.

One expat told me that critical thinking is valuable for a country trying to grow. But what about overseas-trained Indonesians who can think critically? Can we hinge our bets on them? To that, a local investment banker replied that certain sectors like banking still need and benefit from the presence of foreigners even if others like marketing do not.

I agree that foreigners add value and that every country, whether developing or not, is enriched by and benefits from both professional and low-skilled immigrants. But I’m also calling for Indonesians to cultivate self-reliance. We, as a nation, are much too enamored with and dependent on our foreign workers. Maybe we could start looking inward and learn to appreciate homegrown talent. Instead of bemoaning our low salaries in comparison to high foreign worker earnings, perhaps we could begin to nurture and educate the next generation better.

The China Daily recently reported that former migrant workers are staying home because they’re finding better job opportunities near their towns and villages, an upside of economic regeneration due to China’s stimulus package.

I hope that there will come a time when Indonesia’s poor no longer have to work in far-flung countries away from their families. In my utopia, Indonesia has a lower unemployment rate than Singapore and our large population is empowered with the skills and training it needs to bring the country’s innate sense of creativity and innovation to the forefront of Asia’s rising giants.

However, we will always be looking for adventure or escape from inhospitable origins or to improve ourselves. Migration is part of being human. It will never stop. And it should not because foreigners add color and a different perspective. Indonesia can still embrace immigrants while striving to be a self-reliant nation.

I'd Rather Be Mauled By Dingoes Than Work Another Day With You

Sometimes, Michael and I take turns being producer on TY Radio. When I do the job, things go alright, and I usually have my materials ready a few hours ahead which gives me time to train students and get them ready for air. When Michael does it… Well, that’s a different story.

To set the scene, Michael has arrived in my room, he has no idea what he’ll do for today’s TY Radio, which will begin in two hours, and he’s trying to make a deal: If I do the work on today’s show, I won’t have to worry about working Monday since he has it covered. But, there’s a catch: he also needs me to come up with the shows after Monday too.

MICHAEL: Monday, I’ve got a show. Bizarrely it’s a Michael Jackson tribute because someone wants to come.

ME: Again? How many Michael Jackson tributes are we going to do? We’ve mentioned him in almost every single show we’ve done this year with all the 2009 wrap-ups.

MICHAEL: Well… But someone… that teacher… I didn’t want to say ‘no’ because that takes a show off our hands and that teacher wants to come – I mean, it doesn’t take it off our hands, but that teacher wants to come from another school and wants to bring some students who want to play.

ME: Who’s the teacher?

MICHAEL: You know Stella?

ME: Stella again? The same Stella who keeps coming to do music shows?

MICHAEL: She wants to come and play Jacko.

ME: Why are you even asking me if I know Stella? Just say Stella. I know who she is. Who’s she bringing?

MICHAEL: Bringing students.

ME: Just general students?

MICHAEL: Yeah

ME: Whatever you want to do, dude. It’s your show.

MICHAEL: So we have to come up with something for after.

ME: Look, I did all the shows all the way from start to Chinese New Year, so whatever you want to do with the rest of them for the next two weeks, pick what you want to do. If Stella wants to do it, that’s cool.

MICHAEL: Yeah, it’s cool with her. Don’t worry about Monday…

ME: I’m not worried about Monday.

MICHAEL: What should we do tomorrow? Should we try and do a show on street food? Maybe it will be too quick to do that.

ME: Like I said, since I did the shows up to Chinese New Year, you can do the shows for the next two weeks or so. From now on, I can take Fridays shows with the girls after we start going out and getting sound around town and working out what the shows will be. This week I have to get them trained up and do the NOW TV course work. Apart from that, I’m swamped with NOW TV for the next two weeks by order of “M”, so it’s on you.

MICHAEL: What do you have to do with NOW TV?

ME: I’m running the courses. Which is perfect that it starts now since I did the shows before, so you can take them this time and I’ll just show up and do ‘em at the appointed time just like you did the last two weeks.

MICHAEL: Fridays isn’t a problem, those girls can talk and I’ll handle it.

ME: No, like I discussed with “M” and the “X” (big-boss), we’ll be doing something a little different with that by training students to go out and get sound.

MICHAEL: Well the problem is we can’t just… I mean… I’d love to do… I asked them “Why don’t we just do one show a week and do it well?” and they were like, “No.”

ME: Well, obviously for the last two weeks we did a show every day, and they were good shows. Every time we got in there, we did a good job, did it on time and the students liked it. They were good.

MICHAEL: Yeah… I guess.

ME: What? You don’t agree? Which show wasn’t good?

MICHAEL: Well, we canceled one.

ME: We did Welcome Back, we did Best of 2009 Movies, we did Celebrity Gossip of 2009, Best Music of 2009… Which one did we cancel?

MICHAEL: It was a Thursday show.

ME: The News of 2009 show? Because there were no students, right?

MICHAEL: Yeah.

ME: And your only job this year, so far, has been to get students into the studio to do the show, right?

MICHAEL: Well… It’s not my only job.

ME: Okay, anyway, that show still went on the air the other day to cover for you because you didn’t have a show. Correct?

MICHAEL: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know. But what I mean is we haven’t done as many shows. We’re one show down, and I think some of the shows… Well, some of them were good.

ME: Which ones weren’t good?

MICHAEL: Ummmm. Well… I guess they were all good.

ME: So we’ve put on a good show almost every time. I don’t see why we can’t keep that up.

MICHAEL: Yeah…

ME: Just put in the amount of effort we put in before, or I should say, what I’ve put in before and we’ll have a good show every time. Got it?

MICHAEL: Yeah, the problem is that you took a lot of the work for the content…

ME: No, I took all the work for the content.

MICHAEL: Yeah, but, the problem is that obviously there’s all the other things to do as well.

ME: Such as?

MICHAEL: Uhhh. Finding students… There’s all of the other aspects of running the show and the radio station, like… that’s why I spend a lot of the time doing the technical side…

ME: Could you be more specific?

MICHAEL: Little things creep up all the time, like the computers, like we’re running out of space on, like, where we store all our shows, that’s one of the things I have to sort out, like, things like that.

ME: Isn’t that Sam’s job?

MICHAEL: Well…

ME: That’s his job, right? He’s tech?

MICHAEL: Yeah.

ME: So what you’re saying is you’re doing his job, and I’m doing your job plus my job?

MICHAEL: Yeah, that’s basically what I’m saying. Well… No. What I mean is… Yeah… What I’m saying is there’s more than meets the eye.

ME: So you’re saying you can’t do the work?

MICHAEL: No, I’m not saying I can’t, I’m just concerned if you just dedicate all of your time for radio to one show on Friday.

ME: I never said that, I said that I can start taking Fridays and after the NOW TV stuff is over, I can dedicate myself to a Friday show every time, train the students and still do what we always do in dividing responsibility. I’m just laying claim to Friday because I’ve already spoken to “M” and “X” and they want to do it, so we’re doing it.

MICHAEL: Well… Do we need to keep that just for Fridays? Because…

ME: If I’m going to use those same students, probably. Unless they start moving schedule time around. So, starting on the 12th, Friday’s are pretty much solid.

MICHAEL: So where are we now? That’s two weeks from now. Two Fridays.

ME: And like I said, I did the last run of shows, so you’re the boss. I’m on NOW TV and training right now.

MICHAEL: I think we should try and do that more, if we can get more recorded content I… The problem is that you can’t just do that on the spot obviously.

ME: That’s why we should be working a week ahead of every show. I’ll be sitting down with the girls to discuss what we want to do, then I’ll be out with them, help them record, gather their materials and edit them until I can get them trained in editing as well, and have shows ready at least a week in advance.

MICHAEL: I reckon they’d be capable of doing that. Editing.

ME: I do too, but that’s a lot to burden them with. I want them to enjoy it, not feel like it’s a full time job. We haven’t even sat down and done mic training or anything.

MICHAEL: Yeah, I guess so…

ME: So just do some brainstorming, send me a schedule, let me know what you come up with, and I’ll be there to assist.

MICHAEL: Got any ideas on what we could do for music on today’s show?

ME: Try iTunes.

MICHAEL: I don’t have an account.

ME: Well, wherever you get your music from then.

MICHAEL: Did you copy your music onto this computer? Can I have a look?

ME: No. I deleted it all.

MICHAEL: What’s your schedule after 3:30?

ME: I have class.

MICHAEL: Well, today’s show, I don’t know if we’ll finish on time. Kristy said she’d be down late.

ME: Well, we’ll see what we can do to begin and end on time.

MICHAEL: Do you have an iTunes account?

ME: Yes, and you can’t have it.

Eternal Infamy vs. Eternal Honor

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your own personal name written down in the pages of God’s everlasting Word? Don’t answer too quickly. First, you might want to ask, “What would it say about me?”

It is a great honor for men such as Job, Moses, Paul, and Stephen to have their names inscribed in the Bible, but, for a few others, it is an eternal shame. One such example is Diotrephes. He is named only once, but it’s not good:

I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

Apparently, Diotrepehes was a proud man, with a love for being “first,” and a willingness to step on a few toes and heads to get there. He was not averse to attacking the Lord’s work, or even the Apostle John. We get a picture of Diotrephes tossing people out of the congregation left and right.

This Church is both the Body (I Corinthians 12:27) and the Bride (Revelation 21:9) of Christ.

Men may remove other men from a local congregation of believers, but Jesus Christ will never withdraw eternal life from His Own Body or divorce His Own Bride. This is the promise and assurance of salvation.

Not so giddy about the plan was Donna Stern, the Midwest coordinator for the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights And Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN).
“They’re going to train students to be subservient workers,” she said. “This is not why parents send them to school.”

Now, it’s true that Detroit has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, so helping anyone get a job there is a true mitzvah.
And it’s also true that the school system has been run into the ground harder than ValuJet Flight 592, with frightful financials leading to layoffs and the closing of nearly 30 schools … and there’s about a hundredmilliongozillion percentage points of absolute certainty that there’s more where that came from.

So, you can close schools and you can layoff teachers but those pesky kids are gonna keep on comin’ – which begs the question: What DO you do with them?

The best thing about life after college (and yes, I realize how pathetic it is that this is my highlight) is getting to read whatever I want and whenever I want. I love it. Today I even made a list of books I want to read and books I want to re-read. Is that genuis or am I completely lame?

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (He wrote my FAVORITE short story ever–A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings–so I feel like I wouldn’t be a true Marquez-lover until I sample one of his novels.)

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Ok. I tried reading this a few times when I was younger. Specifically, it was when I was in 4th grade. And I don’t think my little 9-year-old brain could appreciate it.)

Little Bee by Chris Cleave (My friend just told me about this book. It’s a pretty recent release, so I may hold off on it until it hits the library.)

Anyway. It’s been a week since the whole job implosion. And it’s amazing how much better I feel about it. Everything truly is going to be fine, and I came out of the whole thing more determined than ever. So that’s a plus. I was amazed at how kind everyone has been.

I’ve decided one of the keys to making it in a city is to never get cocky. Never think you’ve got everything under control. Because I feel like the rug can get ripped out from you at any time.

It’s like that quote: If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans.

Just don’t even try. Maybe it’s all about simply learning to go with the flow.

300 Miles to Go, Part I

Man, it’s been a long journey.

We started in August, talking about the idea of launching back out into full-time ministry. It’s been three years and I got really hurt last time. But we both knew the timing was right. I remember sitting on the couch at our house one evening and Kelley asking, “When do we consider this a real possibility?” I couldn’t believe she’d just said that. I’d been resistant before but the timing of her question couldn’t have been more divine.

For awhile I’d been feeling the tug to rejoin the path I’d left a few years back. I knew this could be a big risk. I kept thinking, “Not only is there the pain of past experiences but now I have a family that I’ll cast into this and only God knows where we’ll have to move.”

We talked off and on for the next few days about our options. I pulled out my resume. Added some new experiences to it and posted it to a couple of church job websites. Within a week we had half a dozen promising prospects.

Not a single one of them in Birmingham.

Before too long, three job options began to emerge that we wanted to pursue.

Seattle. Huntsville. North Carolina.

The one in Seattle seemed so exciting and we were convinced we’d be moving our family across the continent. That was a hard idea to stomach but it was a very electrifying prospect. They are a very large Christian resource publisher and I was being considered to write their training curriculum. A couple of interviews later and I received a gracious letter from them to let me know they had chosen another candidate.

We’d been talking (really emailing) the churches in Huntsville and North Carolina to try and setup conversations, possibly even visits if/when the timing was right. These emails and conversations went at a slow but rhythmically predictable pace. We had been at this with a goal of knowing where we’d be placed by Thanksgiving 2009. We had a couple of opportunities to visit with one church and spend an extended amount of time on the phone with the other and started to really get the sense that both of these places were involved in some really spectacular work.

All the while, we knew we needed to get our houses ready to sell (remember, Kelley bought a townhouse before we started dating and after we were married we began renting out). We’d asked a real estate agent we knew to help us sell the townhouse.

We got nowhere.

So, for our house we turned to our good friend, Social Networking. We posted on Craigslist, facebook, Oodle and our own personal website and by the afternoon we had record-interested buyers. We had the pitfalls of some scammers, too, causing us a little bit of chaos and aggravation. Thankfully, we were quickly able to squash them and keep moving ahead. We just knew that with the housing sales still in the crapper, we had to generate some quick interest that would stand out from the other houses on the market in our neighborhood and turn our house around fast.

As most of you may remember, during this time Rosie had been admitted to Children’s Hospital for more than a week, Christmas was only days away and the new year was quickly approaching. This was not a calm stretch of weeks for us. This Holiday season was a little bit busier than others in the past had been. Add to that the stress of not knowing where we’d live once we finally sold – or rented – or leased – our house.

Our plan was to move into the townhouse and live out of our luggage until we knew what direction we’d be heading with these job prospects. Sometime mid-January just before we were heading up for another visit with one of the prospective churches, we signed the lease to our house with the new family moving in February 1. As we were traveling, our agent called to tell us that someone was interested in purchasing our townhouse.

Guess when she wanted to close…

Yep. February 1.

There goes our plan for living at the townhouse. Looks like we’re piling in with Kelley’s folks. Gonna be a tight fit. But hey, saves us lots of money. Still living out of a suitcase, though.

In light of the way God seemed to be working things out, I laughingly told Kelley that I expected to hear from one or both of the churches on February 1.

Meanwhile, we ordered a POD to begin packing up our things to make room for the new family moving into our house. We submitted the order to have it delivered on Thursday. But sovereignly, early Tuesday morning, we were awakened to repeated rings of the doorbell. I threw on clothes and went to the door to find a large 16’ container being dropped off in our driveway. Earlier than we were prepared for but it would turn out in our favor, having two extra days for packing. It’s amazing how our 1500 square foot house fit into such a small space; and humbling to realize that all our earthly possessions are in a little box that is half the size of our garage.

After the final walk-through we said goodbye to the house of all our family memories to date. We were married at this house. We brought our babies home to this house. We celebrated Eli’s adoption here.

Birthdays. Baptisms. Lots of firsts.

It was hard to now see this house so empty after leaving us so full.

We said our farewells, recalled some fond memories and drove away. We needed some rest anyway. “There’s too much limbo in our lives right now. It’d be nice just to have some direction,” we constantly thought. A couple of days later we headed up to West Virginia for a few days of skiing.

Kelley and I finally got a chance to ski together. As we were taking the lift she said, “I wish we just had something concrete. Wish we could make some plans.” And I wished I could give her some answers.

But for now, there’s a long blue run down a snowy mountain calling our names.

We’d only been back to the condo a few minutes when the phone rang. This was it. Could this be the call we were waiting on? Could this be the answer to all our searching? After the conversation played out, we couldn’t have been more excited.

A little scared but really excited.

LOSING OUR CHOICE IN SUPPLEMENTATION!?

THIS IS PRETTY SICK, but the BIG pharmacuetical companies are pushing a bill (Dietary Supplement Safety Act, S. 3002) that would potentially get rid of ALL supplementation offered in the United States.  Europe has already been “jailed” in their choices of health care.

Think about it, if the FDA gets this power, our ability to use something other than prescription medication, will be non existent.  It is all about the cash and the cash is going to the legislators that are pushing the bill.  Go to the link; http://capwiz.com/saveoursupplements/issues/alert/?alertid=14705421 and sign a petition against this CRAP!

If a new bill, the Dietary Supplement Safety Act, S. 3002, passes, it will amend the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and have severe consequences for both suppliers and retailers.

If you manufacture, distribute or broker dietary supplements or, if you supply dietary ingredients, this is how this new legislation could affect you:

• All dietary supplements, whether vitamins, minerals, herbal products and others that were previously allowed under DSHEA, could be removed from the market under S. 3002. This legislation would mandate that every dietary supplement would have to go through a brand new process of government review (yet to be defined) in order to remain on store shelves.

• For the first time in the history of food or drug law, retail establishments would need to register with the FDA.Failing to register could result in severe monetary penalties, up to two times your gross profit. Not complying with even minimal technical requirements, such as minor errors in registration, recordkeeping or reporting could be considered a criminal offense.

• Retailers would also be required to obtain “adequate written evidence”  from suppliers that each dietary supplement product meets all regulatory requirements.Again, failure to do so could result in severe monetary penalties.

• The bill introduces severe monetary penalties for all involved in the supply chain including ingredient suppliers and manufacturers, up to two times their gross profit for failing to comply even with minimal technical requirements. These include oversights in registration, recordkeeping or reporting that have no effect on the safety of a product.

• Suppliers would be required to report all adverse events, not just those that are “serious.” Reporting of all adverse events, including even minor complaints, would provide no additional consumer safety. However, it will add a significant burden to manufacturers in recordkeeping and reporting, as well as exposure to potential product liability lawsuits.

• Introducing new or innovative dietary supplements or dietary ingredients will be subjected to a much more rigorous approval process.

Interviewers are interested in your attitude and maturity, your work ethic, your professionalism and how well you communicate. Regardless of the job, they’re also evaluating you as a problem solver, a team player and someone who wants to learn and grow.

When you get an unexpected question, the most important thing to do is take a moment to ponder, “What can I say that is authentic and professional?”

In the end, honesty is best. This might include saying that you don’t have an exact answer or even admitting that it’s a challenging question. What doesn’t work is posturing, sugarcoating or pretending you know something you don’t. Gaining the interviewer’s respect will always be more important than having a “perfect” answer.

Blog:Schwarzenegger says Obama's stimulus created jobs

At a conservative gathering in Washington discount Mbt shoes this week, former presidential candidate Mitt Romney blasted the $787 billion stimulus bill and asserted it did not create any new jobs.

The California governor, asked about the comments on the ABC news program “This Week,” said many Republican Mbt politicians were railing against the program while seeking stimulus funds for their own districts.

“You have a lot of the MBT Shoes Republicans running around and pushing back on the stimulus money and saying this doesn’t create any new jobs,” Schwarzenegger said.

“Then they go out and they do the photo ops and they are posing with the big check and they say ‘Isn’t this great?’”

The Obama administration says the stimulus has saved or created as many as 2 million jobs. Private economists mbt sale widely agree that it staved off a far deeper economic contraction.

State governors are in Washington this week for their annual gathering and will meet Obama on Monday as both parties gear up for congressional elections in November.

“It’s kind of politics,” Schwarzenegger said of the claims by Republicans that no jobs flowed from the stimulus program.

Learning new skills

It’s been a little while since I last updated my blog. I have been a busy boy though!

I have been getting more involved with the online community I have been a member of since last February, I have been made a moderator of the forums, as well as being the regular “go to” member for anything graphics design related. As a result I have created a new logos for the community and new banners for the site, which still need updating! I keep pestering but the guy who is the person with the ability to make the changes is a very hard man to get hold of! Grrrr!

I have added the stuff I created for the site to my work examples of here so do have a look, and tell me what you think. Hopefully you like!

To add to this I have also been weighing up my options with regards of getting back in to work. As you can probably tell I enjoy all areas of design, but as of late have been more interested in getting into Graphics Design more, but there is a big stumbling block I need to get over with most Graphics Design jobs being posted up, and that is web design. Many Graphics Design jobs like to be more focused on designing for the world of the web. This is totally understandable as I can’t see a bigger platform for advertising and graphics work than the interwebs. With this in mind I have started learning HTML and CSS. So far things are going well, and I now have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS.

Next step for me s to build on this, and to find an employer that is willing to give me a chance to get that vital opportunity to take my first steps into building a career around web and graphic design. It’s going to be hard, but hard work is what it takes, and I’m willing to give 150% to achieve this.

Keeping my fingers massively crossed, though it makes typing that bit more difficult! (A poor attempt at being funny I know, but hey, you have to try, right? :-S)

Bible Study Thursday!

Well tonight was the second meeting of my bible study. It went really well. The Freeway Cafe was actually open this week, so that was a great start. I felt a lot more comfortable, whereas last week I was really nervous. This week we look a lot deeper into the human dialogue of the book of Job. We were able to learn what each of Job’s friends were saying, and Job’s response to each. I thought it was really important to take the time to go through it properly. Job is one of those stories where most people just say “Oh yea, I know that one”; but in reality they don’t know any details to the story. So now we can confidently say we know Job and his friends. Next week we will look at the Divine dialogue found in Job and finish up the book. I love that I am learning new things, even though I’m teaching. It’s fun to discover the Bible. I suggest everyone to discover/rediscover that greatness of God’s Word!!

Another Banner Week

Gosh, there was more exciting news at this week’s meeting of Seacoast Peers for Careers! AR, who had been offered a job last week, met with HR to discuss salary and benefits which ended up being better than expected. No negotiation was needed! And Tim, who had two interviews last week as a result of his Hidden Gems article, was offered a sales manager position at a branch of a company he had worked for early in his career. He told us, between smiles, that it felt like he was “coming home.” Both start March 1.

While there was much cheering, it is also bittersweet knowing that these two folks who have become dear to us are off on new adventures. And as much as we earnestly wished them ‘God speed,” there was a momentary sadness that we weren’t the ones sharing the good news. But such is the ebb and flow of life.

Anxiety & Depression

Question for anyone knowledgable in the following: Anxiety and/or Depression.

How do you know when you’re suffering from one or both? Lately (since beginning this new job) I have been feeling a tightness in my chest, not sleeping well, and a continuing feeling of sadness, loneliness, and helplessness.

I went to WebMD to look up some information and discovered that those symptoms are linked to pretty much every ailment.

A big thing is that I just don’t enjoy this new job. I don’t enjoy driving forty-some miles to get there, and I think I just miss my friends too much.

But I’m trying hard. I’m really trying to find the bright spot; I keep telling myself I’m doing this for my child(family) so that we can live. As opposed to not having a job. I try to think positively and maybe, once we move closer, things will get better.

In the back of my mind I’m focusing on the posibility of being promoted to the branch where I used to work and be the boss there. I think seven years of service and being exposed to the executive duties therein have given me a great chance of stepping into that role. Plus I have built solid relationships with the other customers.

I pray to God every day – every hour of the day – that this current job is only temporary before I move back to where I desire to live.

MOSAIC SIGNAGE FOR 2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP WELCOME VILLAGE – Part 1

Badec Bros Mosaic has created many beautiful mosaic art pieces both indoors and outdoors and continues to grow from strength to strength, with trend-setting designs and professional installations.

The creative and professional team at Badec Bros Mosaic was approached to design and create signage, created from multi-coloured mosaic tiles for the welcome village, which was constructed by Ekurhuleni for the 2010 Soccer World Cup spectacular.

No job is too big or too small for the Badec Bros Mosaic group. The mosaic signage panels measure 5,6 meters in diameter. Our mosaic specialists are currently installing the panels on site. Has it already been 10 years?

Cakes were held on Wednesday for people celebrating their birthday, so the big boss decided to hand out “Congratulations” and gifts to the people who have now been with the company for 10 years – my boss and… me!

I cannot believe that I have been working for this company for 10 years now – 10 years and 8 days to be exact! :S

I don’t know if I should mark this as an occasion or if I should cry!

Why cry? Does anyone really stay in a company for that many years anymore? Back in the good ol’ days people used to stay in the same company well up until they retire – my dad worked for the same company since I was in my primary school days, but even he had a few other jobs under his belt before settling on his final company.

For years I have been saying that I should move on to something new. But I have also followed up that comment with “to what?” I still have no idea what I want to do. Sure, I like photography and I like making jewellery (whenever I do get the time to move away from my computer editing photos, which seems to be never ending!), but the creative world is ridiculously competitive and I know that it’s not something I would be able to survive on. Oh, how I would just love to win the lotto!

So what have I been doing for the last 10 years in this company. Definitely not the same thing I started out in. Maybe if I were then I definitely wouldn’t have been here for this long. I’ve moved from general administration in the Support area to being a team leader for the Quality Assurance team – yeah, it did take me a few years to get here. I do enjoy what I’m doing, even though it can get quite stressful at times and I wish I were out there taking photos instead of being behind my computer desk! Also, there’s still so many things that I want to set up and learn, where I haven’t had the time to actually make a start on because of the amount of work that is constantly on my plate of things to do. The people I work with are great as well. So I really wouldn’t be surprised if I’m still here for a few more years.

Ok, I got a job....Now what?

A real Olympic torch, a real author....

So, that went well. Interview number three, that is. I actually got to feel like a genuine, caring parent, because I made sure Moose got walked before the school run and drove the Weasels to school so I could read to Tiniest Weasel in “Parent Reading Time”. Having rushed through “The Cat in the Hat” (I love the classics) I leapt back in the car and made it to the prospective employment zone in time to meet the Store Manager.

Now, as a point of policy (and not to bore people beyond belief) I’m not going to write about the people or the place where I work unless A: They give me explicit permission to do so or B: It becomes clear that no one there knows or cares about this blog. Since B seems to be the prevailing attitude of the entire world, you may get to hear about it all anyway. But not today.

One of the things I love about being in Canada is the National Pride. Folks love being Canadian. You see it in the advertisements, the fact that the McDonalds arches have a Maple Leaf in the middle, and you can’t miss it right now anywhere in BC. Vancouver is hosting the Winter Olympic games and you can’t move for people in Canada tops, hats, scarves or Olympic mittens. The cars are all festooned with snapping Canada flags, and flags drape the houses, fill the windows, are in every aisle of your favourite Home Improvement Retailer…

It so happens that a couple of our favourite television programmes are on a channel called CTV, and they just happen to be the channel that is screening the principal Olympic coverage. Naturally, their adverts have been saturated with Olympic imagery in the last few weeks, but it’s not just “Watch CTV for the Olympics”, it’s almost all “Support Team Canada” and “Go Canada Go!”. They did a brilliant series of introductions to Canadian Olympians, which made me think – how many members of the British Olympic team could you name? The only one I could really remember was the snotty fourteen year old kid in the posh diving competition*, who blew it at the last minute. What was his name? Exactly. But now we hear about different Canadian Olympians every day. they’re in the papers, on posters in the bus stops, everywhere. I watched the theme song to the Winter Games “I believe”, sung by Nikki Yanovsky and found it very moving. I think I’ve mentioned before, Canadian Pride is a very interesting and non-threatening thing. It’s not about being better than everyone else, not about putting anyone down because they’re NOT Canadian, it’s celebrating the fact that WE ARE Canadian, eh? There are some dreadful commercials by the food suppliers President’s Choice, saying how they supplied some of the food the Canadian Olympians have eaten, and it ends with this “So if they win gold, we’ll take a little of the credit…But not much. After all, we ARE Canadian.”

So tonight, I won’t be celebrating getting a job. Yes,  I’m pleased, it’s a relief and the start of a new phase of life (again!). I’ve noticed how much more I’ve got done in the last few days when I thought I was losing all the time I’ve had at my disposal since we arrived, and I hope I can maintain that momentum when the pace really does pick up. But tonight we’re gathering together as a family and watching the opening ceremony, with popcorn, hot dogs and probably ice cream too. It feels like there’s a great big party here in our adopted hometown and whether there’s any snow up those mountains or not, the world is looking at Vancouver and it would be churlish not to smile and wave. Well, it would be un-Canadian.

*I realise that this may not be the correct name for the event.

Advice - Pick up the Phone during the Academic Job Search

Over the past 20+ years in academia I have chaired and served on over 12 academic search committees.  These search committees have included positions for deans, department heads, professors, assistant professors and non-tenure track faculty.

During that time, how many applicants were too aggressive? How many annoyed the department head or search committee chair because they called on the telephone and asked to talk about the job?  How many search committees discarded academic applicants because they were too eager?

ZERO.  That’s right – I have yet to encounter a single academic applicant who was too aggressive in the job search process.

What is the lesson here?  If you are searching for an academic position, it is not difficult to get a closer, second look.  Simply give the search committee chair or the department head a phone call and discuss the job.  Let them know why you are interested.

This past semester our school had a tenure track job opening.  We had over 160 applicants for the position.  How many applicants picked up the phone (or asked for a phone interview via email) and proactively asked to talk with the department head about the position?  Two.  Two applicants out of 160.  Guess what – both applicants got a close look.  One of these applicants was ultimately our hire.  The entire department is positive about this hire because we feel certain about his desire to be at our university.

I am convinced that I got my first job by picking up the phone.  I had been on a school visit that did not go particularly well.  I really liked the school but I wasn’t in top form during the interview process.  I was told two weeks later that they had made an offer to another candidate.  After a few days of being miserable, I picked up the phone and called the department head and we talked.  A few days later the other candidate turned down the job and I was offered the position.  The department head knew that I wanted to be there.  It was a good hire for the school.  It was a good hire for me.

Moral of the story: If you see a job in academia that you really like, pick up the phone and call the search committee chair and/or department head.  Each phone conversation is a learning experience which will hone your interviewing skills.  Be sincere.  Be yourself.  Who knows – maybe you will land the big job.
